ASY SAAVEDRA
Swedish-American musician and composer Asy Saavedra is pleased to present her debut solo single "Masterpiece" and its accompanying video. The video, which was directed by Louise de Nexon features several looks from the fashion designer Sho Konishi. Asy says, "I am a huge fan and have been obsessed with Sho's work for a while. We ended up using several pieces in the music video including the android look, which has been worn by Beyonce, Dove Cameron, etc. There was an amazing piece that Sho had designed for Paris Hilton but she never ended up wearing it, so I got to wear it in the video. Sho’s designs brought the music video to another level and it was amazing to be able to premiere some of their outfits."
On the song Asy adds:
'Masterpiece' is about not being a masterpiece at all.
At the time of writing this song, I was going through a difficult phase, but every time I put on my headphones, and my producer hat, I felt like God. God energy emerges from the rubble of flaws, heartbreak and difficulty.
Play this song when you are face to face with your flaws or insecurities but choose to embrace them like a masterpiece. Choose god energy.
Asy Saavedra is the lead singer and keyboard player of the electro pop sister duo Chaos Chaos. Asy is kicking off her solo career with her new single “Masterpiece”.
The multi-dimensional and genre bending artist teases us with her playful new single “Masterpiece” from her unannounced upcoming record. Asy’s production is a visceral construction of the playful dance between self- empowerment and insecurity.
Asy has a knack for crafting powerful pop songs, but her recent venture into experimental production has cracked open a sonic universe in which she challenges her own formulas and doesn’t hesitate to take the reins. “I just want a door with a key, I just want to say what I mean… Baby I’m a masterpiece.” Asy is the mastermind and the muse. The result is tantalizing and relatable at the same time. Masterpiece is forthright, but on a closer listen, there’s a vulnerability; Asy’s tone softens when she sings “you can tame the beast, just tell me that you want me.” The adlib vocal wanders recklessly around the main hook, hinting at a messiness beneath the surface. Asy is comfortable showing her power and her weakness. The production on “Masterpiece” is a visceral construction of the playful dance between self- empowerment and insecurity. Asy’s voice breaks intentionally when she delivers the high notes in the chorus, and the sultry “oohs”evoke the intimacy of the bedroom from which they emerged.
“Masterpiece” is just the latest chapter in Asy’s industrious music career. Asy was drawn to her family’s piano from the start; her mother would place children’s books on the music rack in lieu of theory books and Asy would compose music to accompany the pictures. After a chance run-in with Jason McGerr (Death Cab for Cutie), Asy and her sister Chloe formed Smoosh, with McGerr stepping in as music teacher and mentor. The tween duo jettisoned onto the music scene with their 2004 debut album, She Like Electric; later signing to Seattle-based indie label Barsuk Records and opening for alt-rock staples Pearl Jam, Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, Cat Power, and Sufjan Stevens, to name just a few. Smoosh was featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered, interviewed by the Today show, and named “Band of the Year” by SPIN.
Unsurprisingly, Smoosh’s third record showed maturescence at work; experimentation with both pace and genre, the tone of the album was notably darker than previous records, and the sisters seemed poised for their next creative leap. The name ‘Chaos Chaos’ was pulled from jargon their scientist dad bandied around the house; it’s the scientific classification for a species of amoeba that can alter its shape. They drew parallels between their band and the organism: “simple but always changing.”
Asy’s recent venture into composing saw her experimenting with instruments and production and finding ways to use her voice as an instrument. Her score for Trover Saves The Universe has been described as “a sonic playground so sublime and saturated it practically melts into your ears…”
“Masterpiece” sees Asy taking from her Chaos Chaos and composing work, blending pop with avant-garde. The melodies are undeniably catchy, and mixed with Asy’s chaotic production, the listener is never bored.
